Riverfly Monitoring

By Caitlin

Riverfly monitoring is basically checking on the wildlife living in a river. We do it to see how much wildlife there is because some creatures cannot survive in polluted water. By monitoring the riverflies and other creatures we find, we can get an idea of how healthy the river is.

I really enjoy riverfly monitoring because I love finding different bugs and creatures. I think it is a fun and interesting way to explore the river while also learning about how well it is doing.

From riverfly monitoring, I learned how to do kick sampling and discovered lots of interesting information about different types of riverflies. When I compared our findings from another clean, healthy river with what we find in Monks Brook, I feel quite upset. There could be so much more life in our river, but instead, it is polluted and dirty, with very little wildlife.
